About Star Scientific
Our JOURNEY & VISION
Star Scientific Limited was founded in 1998 as a privately funded research and development company devoted to nuclear science, in particular muon-catalysed fusion.
As part of Star Scientific’s research into fusion, we advanced several areas of material science, culminating in the development of the catalyst, the Hydrogen Energy Release Optimiser, or HERO®.
This unique, new-to-science catalyst has been patented globally and has won multiple awards. The most obvious benefit of HERO® is to produce greenhouse gas-free high temperature heat, which is a by-product of chemically combining hydrogen and oxygen back into water. Due to its simplicity, HERO® is far less wasteful and problematic in extracting the energy from hydrogen than the orthodox process of burning it.
This clean heat has multiple industrial applications, and Star Scientific is developing delivery systems to replace legacy fossil-fuel systems.
The catalytic properties of HERO®, however, are only in the initial stages of scientific discovery. Beyond the obvious benefits of clean, safe, high-temperature heat, we believe there are multiple other applications for the catalyst, which can be applied to some of humanity’s other intransigent energy issues. With HERO®, we have only just begun.
Beyond HERO®, Star Scientific is researching other areas of the hydrogen supply chain. Our vision is to develop a supply-chain that is as short, efficient, and sustainable as scientifically possible, overcoming the cost barrier to the development of the clean hydrogen industry.
We also plan to return to where our journey began – the development of muon-catalysed fusion.

Andrew’s vision has been instrumental in taking Star Scientific from a research lab founded by his father, nuclear physicist and inventor, Stephen Horvath, to an international business with the potential to transform a broad array of sectors.

Shayne leads Star Scientific's global infrastructure strategy, driving the planning and delivery of critical projects that support the company's growth. With extensive leadership experience, he oversees the development of scalable operations and engineering capabilities, ensuring the infrastructure behind HERO® is built for long-term performance, reliability, and global expansion.
